White and Black Assignment

This weeks CVP2018 homework assignment was to create in black in white while keeping in mind design and value principles.

I didn't enjoy the process. Like in life, it's hard to enjoy the moment if you have a conversation in your mind going, and in this case it was thoughts about size, value, design, differences, shapes, etc.

It felt more like design to me, which I'm not very good at, than painting. I found myself doing sketches like I did back when I took drawing classes in college but as soon as I started painting my mind, for the first time since I started painting in 2009 didn't go silent.

As soon as I was done I could hear Nicholas Wilton (mentor) in my mind saying "it's a bit top heavy!"

I find it hard to get the results I wanted with acrylic but I'm sure with time I'll get used to them. All learning in whatever field we have chosen to pursue is good.

Putting a Layer of Gesso on Birch Panel

I learned that some of the birch panels could warp after they dried.  This is due
to perhaps using too much gesso on them. Some people on social media told me
that to avoid that, to gesso the back as well or just put an X on the back with
gesso.

I put two gallon water bottles on top of them and that seemed to do the trick, and
now they are ready to paint on.
