Art Institute of Chicago!

Partial view of Chagall's window

Hello Beautiful Art Friends,

I just published my quarterly newsletter (you can read here) but I wanted to go more in depth about my trip to the Art Institute of Chicago.

We started by having breakfast at Wildberries, wonderful American food just a mile or so from museum. There is meter parking on the street. We were super early so we drove the the Art Institute of Chicago after breakfast to scope the parking situation. Someone had told us there was free parking near by but not true. There is no free parking. There are meter parking spaces for $13.00 for two hours (but who wants to stop in two hours and go back and feed the meter, and what if you forget), or parking garages near by that start at $16.00 if you go early enough for their matinee prices, regular prices after 9 am is $32.00 per day. Some people take public transportation. I opted to pay the $28.00 valet parking on the Modern Wing entrance and added a tip.  Hours for valet parking are from 10:30am to 5:00pm. This is a great option as you don't have to waste time looking parking, and when you come out of Art Institute tired from walking their three levels of wonderful art, it's nice to have someone bring you your car.

Regular admission to the Art Institute is $25.00 per person. We got the Audio Tour for an extra $7.50. May I suggest you use their coat facility to check in your coat, purse, or whatever you are carrying. They charge $1.00 per item but it's worth not carrying anything while you view art.

We started on the third floor, viewing their Modern Art collection. The Old Guitarist by Picasso is here, from his Blue Period, and so is Bathers by a River by Henri Matisse.

Then we went to the second floor where we explored Contemporary art and our favorite, Impressionism.
We took in Monet, Georges Seurat's famous A Sunday on La Grande Jatte,  Paul Gauguin, Joan Miro, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and many more. The institute is huge!  We took a lunch break for 20 minutes at their cafe and continued viewing European art but after almost 6 hours I was tired.

We made our way to see Chagall's windows, and I was struck with awe! I had to sit in front of them and allowed myself to be taken by these three beautiful stein glass window panels.  Overwhelming beauty! Definitely my favorite part of the institute.

I felt so grateful to be able to experience so much creativity and wonderful works of art.  This is a must when you are in Chicago.  I am returning again next year to finish viewing the rest of their art collection. I didn't even make it the Modern American Art wing, to see Edward Hopper's Nighthawks! And Since Grant Wood's American Gothic was on tour, I really must return.

There is a LOT of traffic in Chicago so plan accordingly.

Until next time...

MAM!!! Love this Place!

Hello Beautiful Art Friends,

I had the opportunity to travel to Milwaukee, WI. I loved this city, with 20 sculptures along the river bank, including Bronze Fonz...aayyy.

I have been to many museums in my life, including the Louvre and Rijks, but MAM pleasantly surprised me. I was in heaven and didn't want to leave! I actually spend five hours there looking at all the diverse art.  So many artist I have done lessons on when I taught children in elementary school, their work was here! I could see it up close, every stroke, how thick or thin they applied paint, the actual size of their work, and on some, even the painting cracking.

Where do I start...Rembrandt (Loved how he did thick lines for forehead wrinkles), Parmigianino, Wayne Thiebaud (first work I saw upon entry), right along with Andy Warhol, Kandinsky, O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Giacometti, Chagall. There was modern art, realism, abstract, sculptures, so much yet well placed.

I have always loved Dutch painters, Vermeer being an old time favorite, my first love actually. This time I am flirting with the wonderful German Expressionist painters...they just wowed me this time around.  They also give a space to self-taught artist.

If you have time to visit this museum I hope you do. It's nicely set by the lake, so you have a wonderful view to sit by when your feet get tired of exploring this beautiful place and you need a break. They also have two nice cafe's and a restaurant. Locker's for 50 cents if you don't want to carry your things around, and a gift shop.

I caught a terrible cold that put me in bed for a few days so didn't make it to Chicago as I wanted on this trip but returning in November, and looking forward to exploring it's museums.

Hope all is well with you.

Love,
Glad

September Begins!

Studies in progres

Hello Beautiful Art Friends,

September is going to be a hectic but fun month for me. Today is the first day of the Leslie Saeta 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge and I'm all ready for it! It took a lot of work and I did so much learning. This is the first time I will be offering my studies to my art fans. You can read more about it on the website.

I will also be traveling for two weeks in September. I will be up North in San Jose for four days visiting my son before he goes to boot camp in IL, then I myself will travel to WI and IL for ten days. I'm so looking forward to this time off. August turned out to be way busier than what I normally allow myself to be.

When I return I will get busy at my easel as I do have a solo show in October. New abstracts are being created but many more need to be finished by then. I love experimenting with texture so you will see some fun pieces!

Hope you summer was fun, don't forget to remain playful and to laugh often as we go into the Fall.

Glad

Cruising Grand in Escondido

Chris Moats & I at Art Tradition Gallery

Hello Art Friends,

I have been working on larger abstracts for my solo show in October at the Treasurer's Office in San Diego.  It's been really fun and exploring different techniques and learning a lot.

Something Feminine opening reception was so much fun. It was held on a Friday and I had forgotten it was Cruising Friday in Escondido that night, so there were all kinds of old antique cars on Grand, music, good food and of course, lots of good art.

It's always nice to connect with friends and people who have purchased my artwork.

I have actually finished my 30 paintings in 30 days challenge paintings.  I'm so ready for my vacation in September.

May your summer be cool and fun.

30 in 30 Challenge!

Getting Ready to Paint

Dear Art Friends,

30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge for September 2016 - I'm participating once more in Leslie Saeta's Challenge! This time it's different. Since I do paint almost every day, in the past it had been rather easy to do small abstracts and not really challenge myself, but this time I've decided to really challenge myself.

I love using oil for my realistic work but this time I will use acrylic! I find acrylic great for abstract work but hard to work with for realistic work as it dries so fast and I can't quite get the desire colors I want. I will also be using a limited palette.

Another part of the challenge besides the medium, it's that I don't do many landscapes, therefore my theme will be landscapes! These will be small studies, not really intended to be a masterpiece on their own, though who knows what will show up!  I will not be using any reference photos as I normally do either.

These studies will be painted on 5"x7" acid free Matboard cards. They will come with a protective clear bag, which you may remove if you are framing your artwork.

I began my 30 paintings early because I am traveling most of September (yes, they were done within 30 days), but I will not be able to ship them until Sept 26, 2016.

I would love to hear your feedback on the artwork.  I will post one each day, not sure yet if on the blog or the website. I'm even considering an auction site. Will let you know as we get closer to September.

With Love,
Glad

Preschoolers

Preschooler's Art Work

Dear Beautiful Art Friends,

Yesterday I had the opportunity to teach a play date group in La Jolla, CA.

I had six wonderful preschoolers, ranging from 3 to 6 years old.  It was such a blast, I had forgotten how much fun it was to teach little ones.

I was going to have them do something simple they could follow, but them being a few block from the beach, they all wanted to do a beach scene.

Can I say I was impressed with their work?! It turned out great! It was an honor to have them as my students. I'm looking forward to working again with them.

Great news ahead about being represented by a gallery.  While I love networking and selling online, life sometime brings you a curve and you respond gracefully, thus I agreed to be open to all opportunities.

May you have a blessed week.

Glad

Broken Heart

Beloved Oliver (Sept. 16, 2005-July 3, 2016)

Dear Art Friends,

Our beloved Oliver passed away July 3, 2016.  He was happy chasing his ball, in high spirits, but then he collapsed.  Vet said it was some type of cancer that hits them like a lighting bolt, it attacked his little heart until it could no longer pump blood.

Vet said it was painless for him but we were in shocked. To lose our little bundle of joy was devastating.  Our hearts broke and we will grieve for a long time, but we will focus on all the love and joy he brought into our lives and those who got to know him.

I do believe there is an after life, and I choose to believe he is with his brother "Buddy" who taught him so much before he himself left us.

You are missed but you will always be in our hearts.

Glad

Love Creating Commissioned Work

Commission work

Hello Beautiful Art Friends,

After returning from from Los Angeles and San Jose I had a commission waiting for me. I was so happy to work on this painting.  It just love the way it turned out. Now my client has a painting of herself, her beloved dog, and her home that will be with her for years to come. I do have two spots available during August if you want to have your own custom art made by me. Just contact me.

I'm on the board of the Allied Artist Association of San Diego and I signed up for additional duties, since two of our board member's left.

I now administer their fan page on Facebook.  I created their website for the webmaster to maintain it and update it a few years ago since I have experience in creating websites.  I realized that many artist do not know how to create their own website or have knowledge of social media.

I'm opening my schedule to help those who need help in learning how to create a website, or if they want me to build it and maintain it for them, as well as creating a social media media presence for them. If you need help in this area, my rates are affordable so contact me and we can talk about your project.

I'm starting a new commission, and I'm ready to create some abstract work, so stay tune :)

Have a wonderful day.

With Love,

Glad

Graduation Time!

My lovely son and daughter

Dear Beautiful Art Friends,

It's been a while since I posted. My adopted dad is still in the hospital but I had a break from care giving to go to San Jose for my son's graduation from college.

I am so proud of him. My daughter flew from Florida and we had a chance to be together and do some fun things, some new to me like Line Dancing!  I had so much fun :)

Not much chance to paint but being inspired everywhere I go so some new paintings will be created once my adopted dad goes home from the hospital.

Even though I haven't had a chance to paint, I have had several paintings sold this month. I love it!

Enjoy the summer :)

With Love,
Glad

Failed!

Photo by Gladys Jimenez, Tallahassee FL

"Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly". — Robert Kennedy

Hello Beautiful Art Friends,

I began a new painting based on the photograph above, which I took while in Tallahassee FL. I was so excited about capturing it's essence but I failed. You may not believe this but this is the first time I attempted to do a painting that I just couldn't get it to work. In the past I had talked to other artist who used to say their painting was not working and I couldn't understand what they meant but now I do.  Perhaps I was not challenging myself enough.

I worked on this painting for three days using oil on canvas and today I just wiped the entire canvas, smudging all the paint I had applied on it for the last three days. I was just not working. Too many trees and detailed branches, so much texture to capture and I just couldn't really see the entire image.  For some strange reason it didn't click for me. You see, usually I see an image and it's like jigsaw puzzle in my mind, I know which piece I'm going to paint first and then the next one, until it all falls into place, but I couldn't see the pieces on this photograph. One of my art teachers used to comment on how I see things because my paintings were always different than the rest of the class. But this is how I did and continue to see things.

I did learn during the process, and though I failed at my first attempt on an 18"x24" canvas, I am not giving up.  I am going to attempt doing it on an 8"x10" canvas tomorrow. You are probably thinking that it will be harder on a smaller canvas but I'm going to work with the shapes first, then the details, the  way I was taught in school where you cut in the dark, medium, and light shapes first.

So I'm off to the art supply store to get gesso so I can gesso the entire canvas I originally used for this painting and this way I can use it for another painting. Or may be even the same painting, after I do the smaller version.

And what if I can't make it work still? Well, at least I took a photograph that I absolutely love, that captured the essence of the place :)

With Love,
Glad

Permission to Create

Dear Beautiful Art Friends,

I just finished reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.  I love the way she writes, I enjoy her sense of humor, and though the book was not what I expected, it sure hit home in many areas.  After reading it I felt I got permission to create my own art.

You see, I love to paint and create, but over the last three years, when I decided to sell my work online and become a full-time professional artist, I began to feel frustrated. Frustrated because I was not selling my art for what I felt it was truly worth (though other artists told me it takes time), and frustrated because I spent a lot of time on marketing the artwork and felt it took away from the time I could be painting instead.

At the end of last year I decided that after my featured show, which I just had in February, I was going to scale back on social media and marketing so I could paint more.  I have a lot of fans that like my abstract work and I had continued to paint abstract because I do like to sell my art, but in addition to painting abstract, I also want to do more realistic paintings and to experiment with different mediums and just savor the process.

In Gilbert's book she talks about art as a vocation, and how it doesn't have to be your career.  I don't know where I got the idea that my art was supposed to provide for me financially all my needs but I did want it to do so, which put a heavy burden on my creativity.  But how else would I be able to paint all day?  Right.

And although I have always been a bit of a rebel, some people that create art and do make a good living out of their art advice that we should stick to one style if we want to be successful at it. Well, I can't do that, I am full of creative ideas and they take shape and form in so many different ways that a while back I decided I had to be me.  I can not limit my creativity to just one style!

Not that I don't believe down the road I won't be able to make my living out of my art, because I believe I can with the right marketing, time and effort. And it's not like I'm totally going to drop off the art world either. But at this time in my life I am happy just creating, and God has also gifted me with an entrepreneur spirit to provide for me financially in a way that allows me to still paint every day anyways.

With my permission from Gilbert, I am creating again what I want and it may never be seen by others or it may, and it may be received with open arms or with criticism, but thanks to the idea from the book that we all have a genius that needs to express itself through a willing artist, it's really not my business how the world receives my art, its only my business to put it out there, that's all.

I welcome your feedback.

With Love,
Glad

Loads of Fun

Art From The Heart Opening Reception

Hello Beautiful Art Friends,

Had so much fun at the opening reception of Art From The Heart. It was good to see good friends and to make new friends. People seemed to enjoy themselves and the artwork. I love hearing feedback from people on my art and asking them which piece was their favorite and why. See video of event here: http://gladsart.com/videos.php.

I noticed that for my abstract featured artist reception last year, it was a younger crowd between 22 and 32 and for my realistic artwork, it was people more my age or older.  While both receptions were fun and I sold artwork in both, I found it fascinating to see such difference in the group. Even in the amount of wine and food consumed and how they connected to my work.

I'm currently in L.A. but can't wait to go back home and finish my current painting of Torrey Pines and begin one based on La Jolla for an upcoming show by the La Jolla Library. Excited to participate in that show so I have to do some photo shooting of La Jolla because I want my painting to be creative.

I hope your Valentine's day was lovely.

Until next time...

With Love,
Glad

20 Things You Need To Do If You Are Hosting Your Own Art Reception

Hello Beautiful Art Friends,

I wrote this article for my new artists friends, to help them with their next art reception.

20 Things You Need To Do If You Are Hosting Your Own Art Reception

I am the Allied Artist Association of San Diego featured artist for the show Art From The Heart, and I’m having my opening reception tomorrow, February 13, 2015. During my last art reception we ran out of wine half way through the reception and I felt terrible. This time I wanted to make sure I things went differently. So these are the steps I have taken, and after the reception tomorrow, I will probably have more things to add to the list but for now here is my list:
  1. Once you find the venue for your art reception and date, think of a theme and do a press release. Three months ahead of time from the reception date would be ideal. Other media outlets can have access to the press release in case they want to use it to promote you.
  2. Start giving a teaser about the event through social media. Don’t say what it is but say something like “It’s coming in February”. Every other day add more clues to it.
  3. Make a flyer for the event and get some good photographs of your artwork and of yourself. Start contacting local newspaper, local online publications, radio stations, and anyone in the media who can help you promote it.
  4. I sent an invitation through Eventbright.com to all my personal contacts in the area. This way I could track who opened the invitation, who clicked through the link, who RSVP and who didn’t open it at all. This allowed me to resend several invitations to those who didn’t not open the invitation with different subject headings. I sent those who didn’t not open the invitation on the fourth email in the subject line “I know you won’t open this..” and I noticed a lot of them did after that heading and emailed me to tell me they didn’t know it was me sending the invite. Who knew!
  5. Start promoting on all your social media venues. The more people see the event the better, so frequently do so. I actually did a count down that started when there were 5 days left until event.
  6. Ask people in your social media network and your personal contacts to share the event with their list. It doesn’t hurt to ask and this will bring people who you would normally not meet.
  7. Go to venue and see how much space you do have and start making a map of where each painting will go. See if there is adequate lighting, if not, you may want to figure out a way to brighten up the space before the event.
  8. When you make a list of your paintings or artwork for the show, include paintings of different sizes and prices so people can have more options. Make sure you have quality photographs of all your work so when they sell you don’t have to worry about getting a good image.
  9. Prepare your artwork for hanging. Make sure your work is signed if you sign your work, and you have a label or stamp with you name and contact information in the back of the artwork.
  10. Installed the show. Make sure you take with you extra wiring for the art in case one breaks, hammer & nails (if needed), masking tape (comes in handy when a painting just doesn’t want to stay straight on the wall), labels for the artwork if not provided by the venue. This will take three times longer than you anticipated!
  11. Once installation is complete, take photos and video of it. Great to use for your website, social media, and other promotions.
  12. Do flyers and go to areas near your venue and put them on their community boards.
  13. Make a list of how many bottles of wine you will need if serving wine, better to have extra bottles than to run out. Have some light refreshments, nothing complicated as people should be coming to see your artwork and not to have a meal. Some water for those who do not drink alcohol. Something for your clients to take home with them like a post card with your work, business cards, or book markers with your art (pre-ordered 6 weeks before the show so you have plenty of time to receive them).
  14. Make a list of other things you will need during the reception. For example, glasses to serve the wine, platters for snacks, napkins, ice bucket, etc. A waste basket if venue doesn’t have one. Don’t forget a nice table cloth, and perhaps some fresh flowers.
  15. As you get closer to the reception, if any magazine did any articles on your show, post them to your website and social media.
  16. Remind people who are coming two days before the reception date. Also those on social media, remind them on the actual day of the reception and during the reception so they won’t forget or be more inclined to attend.
  17. Enlist the help of other people to help you during the reception with setting up, cleaning up, helping people check out when they purchase the art and keep record of inventory sold, and someone to help you with serving the wine so you have time to talk with your guests. Get s0meone who will photograph you with your guests, video and broadcast through Periscope.Tv the event.
  18. On the day of the reception get to the venue early enough to make sure all artwork is still properly hanged. Meet your helpers and start setting up. It helps to have a list of what needs to be done and ask them to choose which part they will each do.
  19. Relax, have fun, enjoy the event.
  20. Help your helpers clean up. Make sure you turn off air conditioner, all windows and doors are locked, alarm on, and anything else that needs to be done so venue is secured.
I’m sure this list will grow with time, and if you have any other tips, I would love to hear from you.
With Love,
Glad

Challenge and Installation Complete!

Bob and I installing Art for the Heart show

Dear Beautiful Art Friends,

Last time I posted I had finished updating my website, well so I thought. After giving it a final check I changed a lot of things and now I do think it's perfect! If you have a chance take a look at it, I would appreciate your feedback.

Installation for Art from the Heart show is all complete. It took us almost three hours! It was very hard to level the painting because of the wiring system they use. There are tricks to it though, so next time it should be faster.

You can go to the Riford Center in La Jolla and enjoy the exhibit now, and though I'm the featured artist for March, there are many other artists exhibiting their artwork, so worth the stop. Better yet, come to the opening reception Feb 13, 2016 at 4:30 pm. I will be there until 7:00 pm.

The 30 paintings in 30 days challenge is over. Gives me a tad of more time to create more of the art I want to create. I ended up the challenge with several Valentine's day paintings which started selling pretty well. I still have a few left and I'm planning to take them to my art reception, which is what I intended to do with them in the first place. You can see them at my website, under Whimsical Paintings.

I was invited by the Escondido Municipal Art Gallery to donate a piece of artwork for their Panache Auction event. It's a pretty fancy event. It's an honor to be invited as they only invite artists that have won awards and they feel meets the quality level of good art.  I'm having a hard time choosing which piece to donate but I'm sure I will figure it out by the time it's due.

This is it for today. I need to head over to 57 Degrees in San Diego and pick up my artwork from the last show.

Have fun and if you find any interesting art articles, send me a link.

Love,
Glad

Busy Bee Here

Hearts 2 Love - Mixed Media on 4"x4" canvas

Hello beautiful art friends,

The last month has been really busy. I don't like to be this busy and try hard not to allow myself to get to this point but between being away on travel, tax season ahead, participating in the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge and being the featured artist with the opening reception next month, it has been a bit overwhelming.

I have being able squeezed some time to paint, can't stay away from painting for long. I have create some fun pieces as the one above for Valentine's Day. They are part of my Whimsical Paintings and I do enjoy making them.

I also updated the website a bit. Even though I do so periodically, I feel it's required each new year.  Let me know what you think. I welcome all your comments.

A quick reminder that my Featured Artist reception is on February 13, 2015 at 4:30 pm at The Riford Center in La Jolla. If you are local to San Diego or in the area, I would love to meet you in person there.

I'm keeping it short today. Metta to you :)

Love,
Glad
