First Prize Award!

 Dear Beautiful Friends:

I'm thrilled to report that my artwork, shown above, won first place at the "All Mixed Up" art exhibit at the Escondido Municipal Art Gallery!

I so wanted to be at the reception to receive the award but unfortunately my dad was in a accident and I've been spending my days at the hospital, here in L. A.  It doesn't look good but I have faith that things will turn around. Thank you all of you who follow me on Facebook, and who have been praying for him and myself and family.

It will be a while before I can return to my normal activities, I plan to stay up here with my parents during these times.

2016 Panache Event

Dear Beautiful Art Friends,

The Escondido Municipal Art Gallery will have it's annual fundraising event on March 19, 2016.
I will be at there from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, as I need to leave early to go to another art reception.

I had the privilege of being invited to participate in Panache 2016 as only award-winning artist are invited to donate to artwork for this upscale event. I donated my mixed media painting "Giverny". The event is from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. 

You may also preview the artwalk during the 2nd Saturday artwork on March 12, 2016 from 5:30 - 8:00 pm. If you are local, this is a great venue to get great art at auction prices.

Challenge and Installation Complete!

Dear Beautiful Art Friends,

Last time I posted I had finished updating my website, well so I thought. After giving it a final check I changed a lot of things and now I do think it's perfect! If you have a chance take a look at it, I would appreciate your feedback.

Installation for Art from the Heart show is all complete. It took us almost three hours! It was very hard to level the painting because of the wiring system they use. There are tricks to it though, so next time it should be faster.  

You can go to the Riford Center in La Jolla and enjoy the exhibit now, and though I'm the featured artist for March, there are many other artists exhibiting their artwork, so worth the stop. Better yet, come to the opening reception Feb 13, 2016 at 4:30 pm. I will be there until 7:00 pm.

The 30 paintings in 30 days challenge is over. Gives me a tad of more time to create more of the art I want to create. I ended up the challenge with several Valentine's day paintings which started selling pretty well. I still have a few left and I'm planning to take them to my art reception, which is what I intended to do with them in the first place. You can see them at my website, under Whimsical Paintings.

I was invited by the Escondido Municipal Art Gallery to donate a piece of artwork for their Panache Auction event. It's a pretty fancy event. It's an honor to be invited as they only invite artists that have won awards and they feel meets the quality level of good art.  I'm having a hard time choosing which piece to donate but I'm sure I will figure it out by the time it's due.

This is it for today. I need to head over to 57 Degrees in San Diego and pick up my artwork from the last show.

Plein Air Painting

I'm the one on the left

Hello Friends

Today I joined the Escondido Art Association Plein Air Painting group at Felicita Park, in Escondido. I have painted landscapes before but this was my first plein air outing.

All I can say is that I was not prepared for plein air painting. I had to do my painting really fast because the light and shadows do change fast.  I had to hold the canvas on one hand, painting with the other while fighting off the bugs climbing on me and my art supplies, as well as the stuff that would fall on my painting and paint from the trees. It was not easy to reach my supplies and the sun was hot.

Next time I will take a TV tray table to put my art supplies on, a stool would be helpful to sit on (instead of a rock), and bug spray.  Hopefully area won't be too far from facilities. I guess I'm a city gal, although I love nature and taking long hikes and even camping, when it comes to painting, I prefer my studio.

Although it took me about 30 minutes to do this artwork, I was going for the impressionist style, I like my little painting under the circumstances it was painted on. My first oil landscape in years :)

I was surprised to see fake trees a long the park. The fake trees are used to cover up cell phone towers at the park. It's my understanding they are all over the place now. It was a beautiful day outdoors and so happy I got to experience plein air painting, as it was something I wanted to do for a long time.

First Place in Visual Arts

Hello Friends,

I'm thrilled to announce that this year's Award-Winning Literary Magazine, Bravura, has awarded me the first prize in Visual Arts for the self-portrait I entered in their annual contest.  It comes with a cash prize too :)

I will be attending the Gala reception in San Marcos on May 20, 2013, were I'll receive the award. Looking forward to the publication to be released.

This Saturday is art walk here in Escondido. I'm looking forward to do my regular stops. I start at the Escondido Art Association, then The Escondido Municipal Art Gallery, a quick stop by Distinction Gallery and Traditional Gallery, and the final stop at Michael Steirnagle's art studio.

I've been working on figure painting for a year now, and I'm ready to do some landscaping paintings during the summer. Stay tune for new work.

Fundraising, Art Classes and Events

Dear Friends,

This month I participated in the Artful Inches event at the Escondido Municipal Art Gallery. It was part of a fundraiser where artist came together to create beautiful art, which would be sold by the art gallery by the inch. All funds went to help high school students to exhibit their artwork.

As you know, or may not know, I'm back in school improving my skills. Taking head drawing, life drawing and figure painting.  I love to create and happy to learn from other talented and well known artist.  As I learn new techniques, and improve, I am starting to feel the need to create in my own style scenes of beaches and places near the beach. I'm lucky to live in Southern California, where the ocean is just a 25 minute drive.  I've been wanting to paint this theme for so long, but no more waiting.  In March I will begin the "Beach" series and I have so many painting in my mind that I want to do, that it may take all of my painting time for the next year or two, so stay tuned.  :)

Art, Art, and more Art...

Dear Friends,

I'm so happy to announce that for the month of February, my work will be on exhibit at three galleries.  There will be on piece, "Diana", at the Municipal Art Gallery. Three pieces at the Escondido Art Association, "Deer", "Mr. Rooster", and "Music and Dancing".  Those will be on exhibit for one month.  At 57 Degrees, down town San Diego, for two months I will have on exhibit "Red Barn", "The Southwest", "Lady in Red", and "Michael Hanlon".  So very excited to be at this exhibit among other fellow artists.

Today I taught an art class to 5th graders. I volunteer at the local elementary school since 1998.  I had so much fun teaching them about art, complementary colors, and Paul Klee.  Kids have such a thirst for art and happy to be able to do my share my love for art with them.  I wish more people donated art supplies so we could reach more children. Volunteers are available but without the supplies even with our most creative resources, it's tough to do.  The non-profit organization I founded to raise funds for art supplies is Boldly Creating Life Foundation. If it's in your heart to promote the arts to children, please stop at the website http://www.bclf.org and make a donation. It will be greatly appreciated by me, the children, teachers, and families.  Of course, your donation is tax deductible.

Painting Daily, Oh Yeah

Dear Friends,

It's hard to believe that in three weeks my Figure Painting class will be over.  I learned much from the critics, and a few more techniques that I can add to my paintings.

For the final painting I was assigned to paint in a style that is the opposite of my own.  To choose an artist and copy their work but replacing the main figure with my own self.  In my case, it would be to learn the style of Degas or Van Gogh. I chose Van Gogh and what a fun exploration it has been, to see how he created short colorful strokes to create movement and depth.

Currently at the Escondido Municipal Art Gallery you can see my painting "eMotion" on display until the first week of next December.  I was happy to receive wonderful feedback from people who stopped by to see it during my short visit at the reception.  It felt great to know that others were moved by it.

Back to the easel, much to work on for my final painting.

Back to School

Hi Friends,

This year I went back to school. Being a self-taught artist, I always wanted to have all those wonderful art classes I didn't take in college, so this year I went back. I am loving every single art class I have.

I must admit that learning the fundamentals is hard work. I've never worked so hard on doing black and white oil paintings as I am right now with Painting 1.  But it's so much fun too.  

I love my Color and Theory class as well.  It amazes me that nothing has color, that an object is simply absorbing from the spectrum a particular hue, thus the lighting can change the color of an object.  

I've also been working on graphite drawings for my Drawing 2 class. I forgot how rewarding it is to create just using a pencil!

This month my artwork "Chance" will be on exhibit at the Escondido Municipal Art Gallery.  I hope to meet some of you during the Artist Reception.

Exhibiting Again

Hello Friends,

In December my artwork "Collage" was on exhibit at the Escondido Municipal Art Gallery. It was the first time I exhibited my work at this gallery.  Previously I had done so at the Escondido Art Association.  I was at the Artist reception and it is always nice to meet other artist, and see their creations.

In January I took sometime off and went to Monterey, CA. I had a wonderful week there. I went to the next town, Carmel, which is full of beautiful art galleries. I visited every single one and saw much beauty. Unfortunately it seems like some of them are going out of business due to the economy, which was surprising to see.

I also went to Pacific Grove, CA, to their Art Association there and met a wonderful photographer, by the name of Jean Brenner. Her photography exhibit on "The Faces of Islam" is wonderful to see. I was lucky that she was there and that she gracefully took time to explain some of the history behind her photos.

I'm looking forward to a year of art :)
